[this web page last updated 9 July 07] Thomas K. Simpson, Maxwell's Mathematical Rhetoric: Rethinking the Treatise on Electricity and MagnetismGreen Lion Press is delighted to issue as a fine volume Simpson's classic work, which has been circulating underground for decades as photocopied typescript. It is the first major study of Maxwell's Treatise to take seriously the way Maxwell's presents his arguments. This is the original full treatment, to which Simpson's Figures of Thought provides an enticing introduction. Thomas K. SimpsonNewton, Maxwell, Marx: Reflections on the Idea of ScienceThis book is based on a series of essays by Simpson that originally appeared in Great Ideas Today, annual supplements to Encyclopaedia Britannica's Great Books of the Western World. These essays explore the approaches of the three scientific thinkers. Simpson shows the differing styles of the two thinkers who gave us modern physics (and between whom Einstein had to choose) and how Marx followed the pattern of Principia in laying out his treatise Capital. The essays are embedded in a new "Greek chorus" that introduces and ties them together and teases out and explores the questions their juxtaposition raises.
